Saving PHL's waters from invasive alien species
Excerpt
Researchers from the Ateneo de Manila University recently raised the alarm over potential invasive alien fish species infesting Laguna de Bay. They identified the fish as “tinfoil barb” (Barbonymus schwanefeldii), an “aquarium pet” that has found its way into the waters of Laguna de Bay, the country’s largest inland freshwater lake. This fast-growing omnivorous species, which means they are feeding on both plant and animal substances, can rapidly outcompete native fish for food and breeding grounds, the researchers said.
