The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has installed five navigational buoys near four Philippine-held detachments in the Kalayaan Island Group (Spratly Islands) in the West Philippine Sea to ensure safer navigation for ships and fisherfolks. The move is also deemed as symbolic of the country’s assertion of its sovereignty in the disputed waters. The buoys were planted from May 10 to May 17 near Lawak (Nanshan) Island, Likas (West York) Island, Parola (Northeast Cay) Island, and Pag-asa (Thitu) Island through two buoy tenders BRP Corregidor (AE-891) and BRP Bojeador (AE-46).
