A Coal-Fired power plant project located in Maasim town, Sarangi province is under fire for allegedly causing the destruction of coral reefs. Sr. Susan Bolanio, of the Oblates of Notre Dame Hesed Foundation Inc., a non-government based in General Santos City, said the Alson's Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) built a small wharf at the site of the power plant in Barangay Kamanga, Maasim town. Bolanio said the cost of damage estimated by the fact-finding team of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has reached P8.5-million.
