The approaching El Niño phenomenon may benefit certain species of fish despite the weather pattern's generally-accepted adverse impact, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said. BFAR National Director Demosthenes Escoto explained that El Niño, which is forecast to arrive in June, may pose a problem to land-based aquaculture species like bangus (milkfish) and tilapia since lower water levels may reduce dissolved oxygen in their habitat.
