No-take marine reserves (NTMRs) are areas of the sea, usually with coral reefs -- but could include other coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and seagrasses -- that are fully protected from fishing. The area around MPAs is open to fishing using non-destructive fishing gears, such as the hook and line. "These networks of MPAs should be from 5 to 10 kilometers from each other," said Alcala.
