The high count of algae in the lake, where Maynilad draws water for treatment in its Putatan plant, is causing water distributed in the cities of Las Piñas, Parañaque and Muntinlupa to have a peculiar taste and smell. Jennifer Rufo of Maynilad’s investor relations unit said the concentration of Anabaena algae in the lake rose to 4,000 counts per milliliter from 400 milliliters on June 8 when the incident was first monitored. “This resulted in recurrence of the unusual taste and odor in the water supply despite the system adjustments we have been implementing. We have intensified our onsite chlorination and flushing activities,” Rufo said. Algae multiply rapidly during the summer season.en
