Prawn growers in the country who overstock their farms to ensure a bountiful harvest might unwittingly be courting economic disaster, a top fishery official said over the weekend. Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources director Juanito Malig said scientists at the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center has informed him that a virulent type of water bacteria has started invading prawn hatcheries in Iloilo primarily due to overcrowding.
