The country's prawn industry has been showing signs of recovery from the impact of the glut in the Japanese market, but this may backfire if the government does not intervene to make the Black Tiger prawn competitive in the world market by reducing production costs, especially those of prawn feeds. The industry depends largely on locally manufactured prawn feeds, which account for 65-70 per cent of total production cost, but this does not indicate that local producers are more competitive than their counterparts in Thailand and Indonesia who now produce cheaper prawns which they sell to Asian, North American and European markets.
