The ground-breaking Iloilo River Development Project has led to the successful rehabilitation of the 15-kilometer estuarine. In 2004, the Iloilo-Batiano River Development Council (IBRDC) relocated 1,000 families who were living along the banks of the Iloilo River to the PhP170 million Iloilo River Plains Subdivision in barangays Camalig and Lanit in Jaro, Iloilo City. The families now enjoy not only shelter but a school, multi-purpose hall, livelihood, road access, electricity, and water. The government then restored the original boundaries and flow of the river based on a 1916 Cadastral Survey by the DENR, which, for years, had been altered and blocked by derelicts, idle vessels, dikes and fish pens.
