    Excerpt
The coastal town of Dumangas in northern Iloilo is vulnerable to the effects of climate change such as storm surges and tidal waves. Thus, mangrove reforestation is a priority of the local government, said Mayor Rolando Distura. Hundreds of volunteers planted mangrove propagules in Barangay Bantud-Fabrica, Dumangas recently. Mangrove forest provides protection and shelter against extreme weather events, such as storm winds and floods, as well as tsunamis. Mangrove absorbs and disperses tidal surges associated with these events.
