Years back, grouper (lapu-lapu) used to be caught in the wild or in their natural habitat - the sea. Now, it can be raised in brackish water ponds, thanks to a technology developed by the government-hosted, Tigbauan, Iloilo-based Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD).
