The sailing on Sunday of the the Liaoning, accompanied by five escort ships, and the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier strike group came amid rising tensions in Taipei as well as a heated exchange of words war between Beijing and Manila over suspected Chinese naval militia in the West Philippine Sea. China is pressing ownership of almost all of the South China Sea citing its already discredited Nine-Dash Line claim.
