The Department of Agriculture (DA) will be tapping Badjaos, in the country's sea gypsies, as auxiliaries in the "Bantay Laut" program. DA Secretary Manny Piñol said his department has already identified some Davao-region based Badjaos as part of the first batch of sea gypsies who will be tasked on monitoring and protecting coastlines. According to Piñol, the Badjao fishermen enlisted in the first batch of auxiliaries were given fiberglass motorized boats to enhance their livelihood source and undertake their sea protection functions, as well.
