<description>Polyculture project posts strong harvest, signals boost for region's aquaculture
Galigao, Neljoy
A government-backed aquaculture initiative has delivered a strong harvest in Iloilo, with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) reporting a combined yield of 1.56 metric tons of tilapia and 450 kilograms of giant freshwater prawns — underscoring the viability of polyculture systems in boosting fishery productivity and farmer incomes. The partial harvest conducted on April 8, 2026 in Barangay Nanga, Pototan highlights what experts describe as a scalable model for sustainable aquaculture, as authorities push to strengthen food security and rural livelihoods through innovation. The project, dubbed “Grow-out Polyculture of Nile Tilapia and Giant Freshwater Prawn,” utilizes a system that allows both species to be raised simultaneously in a single pond, maximizing space and improving production efficiency.

<description>New Iloilo feed mill to absorb crops, cut aquaculture costs
Angelo, Francis Allan
A newly inaugurated PHP 30-million aquaculture feed mill in Tigbauan, Iloilo is set to open a steady market for local crop producers while easing one of the heaviest cost burdens on the province’s fish farmers, officials said during the facility’s launch on April 27, 2026. The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) and the Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) jointly opened the plant inside the SEAFDEC/AQD compound in Barangay Buyu-an. It is designed to produce 5 metric tons of feed per day at standard capacity, with a maximum output of up to 8 metric tons.

<description>New feed mill eyes cheaper aquaculture in Iloilo
Oladive, Mariela Angella
A new medium-scale aquaculture feed mill is expected to ease production costs and strengthen fish farming operations in Western Visayas after it was officially inaugurated on April 27 by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Regional Office 6 and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center/Aquaculture Department. Located inside the SEAFDEC/AQD complex in Barangay Buyu-an, Tigbauan, Iloilo, the facility can produce up to 5 metric tons of aquaculture feeds daily, or around 1,560 metric tons annually. The output is expected to support farms covering as much as 160 hectares of ponds across the region.

<description>DA-BFAR proposes PHP 9, 000 monthly aid for fishers
Oladive, Mariela Angella
The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) has proposed expanding its fuel subsidy program to cover more fishers nationwide affected by rising petroleum prices amid tensions in the Middle East. DA-BFAR Assistant Director for Administrative Services Zaldy Perez said the proposal follows the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure continued high fish production and a stable food supply in the country. “The proposal covers not only the municipal but the commercial, and aquaculture based on fish landings,” he said in an interview on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new feed mill at the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center/Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) complex in Tigbauan, Iloilo, on April 27.
