<description>M/V Trisha Kirsten 3 may have been overloaded - PH Coast Guard
Sadongdong, Martin
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said, on Friday, Jan. 30, that the ill-fated roll-on/roll-off M/V Trisha Kirsten 3 may have been overloaded when it sank in the waters off Basilan on its way to its final destination in Jolo, Sulu, on Monday, Jan. 26. PCG Spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said the basis for this assessment was the recovery of 11 more bodies on Thursday, Jan. 29, near the wreck site about 2.75 nautical miles northeast of Baluk-Baluk Island.

<description>Science, indigenous wisdom and a race against decline
Richter, Mat
The Philippines is home to a wealth of marine habitats, yet images of poverty and environmental degradation continue to define many of its coastal communities. Spanning more than 1.4 million hectares, the Verde Island Passage (VIP) lies in the western Pacific Ocean and covers parts of Batangas, Marinduque, both sides of Mindoro and Romblon. Despite its global recognition as a marine biodiversity hotspot, communities along and beyond its coastlines are experiencing what appears to be a gradual decline in quality of life. Oil spills, loss of livelihoods and widespread corruption that weaken natural defenses remain persistent problems.

<title>A fisherman's tale</title>

<description>A fisherman's tale
Concha-Colmenares, Pinky
There are many good people in the world, quietly ready to write happy endings to stories weighed down by loss—if only someone tells those stories. In 2013, one such story appeared in the Manila Bulletin. It was about a fisherman who had lost almost everything to Super Typhoon Yolanda—his house, his fishing boat, and long before that, his wife. What followed surprised even those who believed most strongly in the power of compassion: readers sent help, strangers became benefactors, and a broken narrative found new footing.

<description>Red tide warning issued in Pangasinan
Iñigo, Liezle
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) warned the people that all shellfish and alamang harvested from the coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda in Pangasinan remain positive for paralytic shellfish poison or red tide and are not safe for human consumption. The advisory issued on Jan. 29 urged residents and stakeholders to refrain from gathering, transporting, or selling these seafood until the warning is officially lifted.
