Mananga River rehabilitation hits 50%; Ecopark eyed on cleared riverbanks
Padronia, Earl Kim
The massive cleanup and repair of the Mananga River in Talisay City is halfway finished. As workers widen the river to prevent future flooding, city officials are planning to turn the cleared areas into a new public eco-park. DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon inspected the site on March 25, 2026, alongside Governor Pam Baricuatro and Mayor Samsam Gullas. He noted that the dredging and widening work must be finished before the rains return in June. The project follows the heavy damage caused by Typhoon Tino in November 2025. By widening the river now, the city hopes to protect low-lying neighborhoods from going underwater again.

Fuel hikes sinking fishermen's earnings
De Vela, Juan Carlo
Following the recent fuel price surge, Jamlo Villaber, 52, a fisherman in the Municipality of Cordova, is struggling to earn a living from harvesting sea urchins, locally known as “swaki.” He sails out twice a day, with his daily fuel expenses rising from around P400 to as much as P700. On a good day, he harvests four to five pails of sea urchins, which he sells for P150 per pail, earning approximately P750. Jamlo travels to a nearby gasoline station to fill a five-liter container for his small boat before heading to the waters near Pandanon Island. He has four children, including a 13-year-old who is still in school.
