Residents of Anda and Bolinao in Pangasinan have been warned against consuming shellfish collected from their coastal waters due to the presence of algae that produce red tide. In a post on social media, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said tests conducted by BFAR’s marine biotoxin laboratory showed that shellfish meat samples collected from these towns contained the paralytic shellfish toxin.

The Philippine Coast Guard has deployed four new high-speed response boats or HSRB as part of the PCG’s maritime security enhancement in Western Mindanao. The boats – HSRBs 023, 024, 027 and 028 – were received and blessed during a ceremony led by Commodore Marco Antonio Gines, chief of the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao and CGD Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The watercraft were part of the 40 units procured by the PCG from a local ship-building company in Cebu.

Sending US ships to escort Philippine vessels on supply missions in the West Philippine Sea is “an entirely reasonable option,” the chief of the US Indo-Pacific Command said yesterday. Admiral Samuel Paparo made the remarks on the sidelines of a defense forum in Manila, in response to a media query whether Washington would consider providing escorts to Philippine ships taking supplies to the BRP Sierra Madre or to land features in the West Philippine Sea occupied by Filipinos. “I mean certainly, within the context of consultations,” Paparo added, without giving details of ships likely to be employed for the task.
