The Philippines has formally filed a diplomatic protest in light of China air force’ s dangerous actions in Scarborough Shoal over the weekend. Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesperson Teresita Daza said on Tuesday that the diplomatic protest was lodged on Monday afternoon but she opted not to give further details about it. Daza, however, said the Philippines “remains committed to diplomacy and peaceful means of resolving disputes” and that the country “adopts a de-escalatory approach to tensions in the WPS.”

The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center – Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) distributed 2.16 tons of tissue-cultured Kappaphycus alvarezii seedlings, known locally as “guso” or “tambalang,” to coastal communities in Northern Iloilo on May 6 and 12 to support seaweed farming and strengthen local livelihoods. Beneficiaries in the municipalities of Concepcion, Ajuy, and San Dionisio received the seedlings grown for four months by SEAFDEC/AQD in Pandan, Antique. The plantlets used in Pandan originated from tissue cultures at the Seaweed Laboratory in Tigbauan, Iloilo.

<summary type="text">Philippine aquaculture to benefit from higher output of fry, fingerlings – BFAR
The improved production of young fish will bolster the country’s aquaculture sector, which accounts for more than half of fisheries output, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said. The BFAR said fry and fingerlings output from its aquaculture technology centers had totaled 335.3 million pieces in 2025, nearly a 3 percent increase from 325.9 million pieces a year ago. The BFAR attributed the improved production to the optimal usage of sustainable aquaculture technologies and the proper maintenance of broodstocks under its National Broodstock Development Program.

Galigao, Neljoy
Alarmed by the continuing depletion of fish stocks in the Visayan Sea, the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 6 has reaffirmed its stand against the use of prohibited fine-mesh fishing nets, warning that unchecked violations will further worsen illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in municipal waters. BFAR-6 regional director Remia Aparri, together with Concepcion’s Mayor Milliard Villanueva, met with members of the Concepcion Sinsoro Owners and Operators Association (CONSOOA) on January 9 to address the continued operation of “sinsoro” fishing, a method that uses fine-meshed nets banned under existing fisheries regulations due to their destructive impact on marine resources.
