The Philippine Navy (PN) on Tuesday formally commissioned its most advanced warship, significantly enhancing the country's capability to patrol and safeguard its 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). "This warship will add to the capital ships of the PN that are capable of patrolling all the way up to our EEZ and even beyond," PN spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said in a press briefing in Camp Aguinaldo.

Commodore Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on West Philippine Sea (WPS) matters, stated on Saturday that the National Task Force for the WPS (NTF-WPS) has been publicizing China’s aggressive actions in the disputed waters to help ensure that future Philippine presidents remain committed to defending the nation’s maritime sovereignty. “We need to reach out and increase awareness to make sure that the President elected in 2028 will not set aside our fight in the WPS,” Tarriela said. “We have to ensure the next president will continue what President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has started and will uphold our stance in the WPS.”

The Philippines, located within the Coral Triangle, is recognized as one of the world’s richest marine ecosystems. Yet, many marine species—such as carybdeid box jellyfish—remain poorly documented. Their potent venom and ecological significance underline the importance of conducting accurate taxonomic studies on box jellyfish. Marine researchers have documented several newly recorded box jellyfish species in the Philippines, marking a vital contribution to the country’s growing database of marine biodiversity.

China's deployment of research and survey vessels in the disputed West Philippine Sea is at the core of its maritime gray zone strategy, allowing Beijing to assert control, gather intelligence, and expand its presence while avoiding direct confrontation, an international monitoring team reported. Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy’s BRP Andres Bonifacio issue radio challenge to a Chinese warship spotted off the Panatag Islands. Operating under the guise of scientific missions, SeaLight said these dual-use vessels—often state-owned or affiliated with the military—conduct oceanographic surveys and resource mapping that serve both civilian and military purposes.
