The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has started establishing the Guiuan Marine Scientific Research Station (MSRS) in Barangay Baras, Guiuan, Eastern Samar. Once completed, the facility will serve as a dedicated center for marine research, training and scientific collaboration in Eastern Visayas, the DENR regional office said.

A 45-year-old fisherman from Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, is recovering in the hospital after a needlefish—locally known as bilaan—leapt from the water and pierced his neck while he was fishing early Thursday. The victim, Edilberto Lacerna, was spearfishing with a companion around 3 a.m. when the incident happened. Rescue teams brought him first to local facilities in Sablayan and Mamburao before transferring him to Batangas Medical Center, where doctors successfully removed the fish lodged in his neck.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Thursday reported another show of force by China in the West Philippine Sea, with armed vessels, water cannons, and drones spotted near Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal. According to AFP public affairs chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad, troops aboard the grounded BRP Sierra Madre and monitoring assets observed three armed China boats while its coast guard vessel held a water cannon display in the area.
