In an effort to cush­ion the impact of the eco­nomic crisis in the coun­try, the Depart­ment of Agri­cul­ture (DA) in Bicol has allot­ted P604 mil­lion fuel sub­sidy inten­ded for 260,050 farm­ers and fish­er­men in Bicol. DA Bicol Agri­cul­tural Pro­gram Coordin­at­ing Officer Florentino Ubalde Jr. told the press dur­ing the vir­tual press brief­ing with the Phil­ip­pine Stat­ist­ics Author­ity (PSA) regional office on Fri­day that the depart­ment will give the fuel sub­sidy under the Pres­id­en­tial assist­ance to cover the 260,050 farm­ers and fish­er­folk. Each bene­fi­ciary stands to receive P2,325 cash assist­ance dur­ing the rol­lout set in the next few days.

The Phil­ip­pines accused Chinese fish­er­men on Monday of pour­ing cyan­ide in waters in the Spratly Islands, a flash point in the dis­puted South China Sea that has been the site of viol­ent con­front­a­tions with Chinese ves­sels. Beijing claims the stra­tegic South China Sea in nearly its entirety, des­pite an inter­na­tional rul­ing that its asser­tion has no legal basis. The Phil­ip­pines’ National Secur­ity Coun­cil (NSC) alleged the pois­on­ing began last year around Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly chain, which sits near vital ship­ping lanes and is reputedly rich in min­er­als.

Deliveries of galunggong (round scad) at the Navotas Fish Port Complex almost doubled in March compared to the same period last year, the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) said. Landings of the staple fish reached 16,165.52 metric tons (MT), up from 8,161.92 MT in 2024. This includes two galunggong varieties — 9,731.68 MT of shortfin scad and 6,433.84 MT of bigeye scad.

House Bill 6785, authored by Eastern Samar Rep. Christopher Sheen Gonzales and co-authored by 4Ps Party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan, seeks to establish the Eastern Samar Polytechnic Institute of Fisheries and Technology (Espift).
