The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) pushed back against Chinese claims that it was the Philippines that recently escalated tensions near Scarborough Shoal (Bajo de Masinloc) that led to the collision between two Chinese vessels in the disputed waters. Speaking at a news forum in Quezon City, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS), Commodore Jay Tarriela, categorically denied Beijing’s accusations, asserting that the Philippines operates within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and follows rules-based conduct. “It is not the PCG or the Philippine government that escalates the tension in the WPS. The reason why tension is rising is because of their dangerous actions and illegal presence within our EEZ,” Tarriela stressed.

The Philippine Navy has shrugged off China’s warning of “consequences” in the West Philippine Sea, describing it as “malign influence.” Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, cautioned the public against disinformation from Beijing. “We have been very deliberate in telling the public: Be careful what we digest especially those messages coming from the Chinese Communist Party because many of these are meant to justify their actions which we know historically have no basis in international law,” Trinidad said.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-National Capital Region (DENR-NCR) formalized an agreement Friday to boost the rehabilitation of the Pasig River and its surrounding communities. The memorandum of agreement (MoA) will focus on public education and promoting sustainable transport, particularly through collaborative projects like “Dalaw Turo” and Pasig River Educational Tours. These initiatives aim to promote the MMDA-operated Pasig River Ferry Service (PRFS) as a viable transport option, raise awareness about the Pasig River Rehabilitation Program, and engage various stakeholders.
